In this post we will show you some peculiarities of Arusian Pragmatics across the three dimensions: person, time and place.

In Arusian, you can order elements in the sentence to promote or demote the persons (actors). Promoted words come first in the sentence, and demoted words come closer to the end of the sentence. Arusian has a so-called hierarchichal word order based on the aforementioned concept.

  • Tei sa lu amr: The speaker is focusing on the listener and is partially promoting themself.
  • Tei amse lu: The speaker is focusing on the listener and is demoting themself.
  • Lu sa tei amse: The speaker is focusing on themselves and partially promoting the listener.
  • Lu amr tei: The speaker is focusing on themselves and demoting the listener.
  • Tei amreis: The speaker is focusing on the listener and demoting everything else.
  • Lu amras: The speaker is focusing on themselves and demoting everything else.
  • Eramra-tei lus: The speaker is focusing on the action performed onto the listener.
  • Eramrei-lu teis: The speaker is focusing on the action performed onto themselves.

THIRD PERSON PRONOUNS

  • Su/so: Used for people, animals, and objects. Therefore, they can refer to either [±human] and [±animate].

INCLUSIVITY AND EXCLUSIVITY IN FIRST PERSON PLURAL IN ARUSIAN

Tei-lu includes the listener, while Lu-pei excludes them but includes people not part of the immediate context (third person).

PLACE

  • Pu: For a thing that is near the speaker
  • Fu: For a thing that is near the listener but far from the speaker
  • Fo: For a thing this is far from both the speaker and listener
  • Umu-lo: For a thing that is very distant/far from both  (out of sight)
  • Nra-lo: For a thing that is very near from both.

TIME

UWELS OF THE DAY

Arusian society divides the day (24 hours) not in units of 60 minutes, but rather in uwels of 180 minutes each. Each day has eight uwels.

  • nouwei-wai-tim: 3:00 - 6:00
  • degrei-wai-vai: 6:00 - 9:00
  • nouwei-wai-vai: 9:00- 12:00
  • degrei-mrai-vai: 12:00 - 15:00
  • nouwei-mrai-vai: 15:00 - 18:00
  • degrei-mrai-tim: 18:00 - 21:00
  • nouwei-mrai-tim: 21:00 - 0:00
